How It Works

Science City and Burns & McDonnell have partnered over the past few years to make sure a visit to Science City is an exciting and fulfilling experience. Now, they’re giving area kids a chance to do the same. It’s the Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains, a unique opportunity for your school group to design the next great exhibit for Science City!

Your reward? Seeing your ideas come to life in one of the country’s best science centers. Oh, and the chance for your school group to earn a piece of a $130,000-plus grant for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education.

Kansas City’s Battle of the Brains for Science City has two divisions: elementary (kindergarten through 6th grade) and secondary (7th through 12th grade). There is no limit to the number of entries a school may submit.

We’re here to provide support in helping your school group reach its fullest potential, including mentors from Science City and Burns & McDonnell, as well as online and in-person workshops.

Here’s how the grant money will be awarded:

  • Winner, Elementary Division — $50,000
  • Winner, Secondary Division — $50,000
  • Two Runners-Up, Elementary Division — $5,000 each
  • Two Runners-Up, Secondary Division — $5,000 each
  • Seven Honorable Mentions, Elementary Division — $1,000 each
  • Seven Honorable Mentions, Secondary Division — $1,000 each

One group of students will be selected to work with Burns & McDonnell’s architects, engineers and builders to make their concept a reality at Science City in 2012.

What else will students who participate earn? The pride of representing your school, a great resume builder and the satisfaction of an effort done well!
